Ms Yang, in Shenzhen, did not wear this 5396G much after buying it; most of the time it lay in a watch box. What had kept her from deciding was not how high the valuation might be but what difference a complete set of accessories actually makes — whether the original box, booklet and warranty card are all present, and how much the offer moves on that. She wanted that settled before choosing when to sell. She also had no sense of how annual calendars move on the secondary market, and asked in some detail.

The client
The model and the market
The 5396G belongs to the Complications series and is the representative annual calendar: it needs setting by hand once a year at the end of February, and works out long and short months by itself the rest of the time. This generation was discontinued around 2010 under the reference -001; the later second generation, -011, moved to a silver-white dial and a 38.5mm case and is not the same version, so the two cannot be compared as one reference. Its dial is a silver-grey sector layout, with day and month shown together in a window at 12 and a moonphase with a 24-hour subdial at 6.
This generation has no current list price. The secondary market for a discontinued reference no longer looks to list; the level of a sale is set mainly by condition, how complete the accessories are and who is buying at the time. A mid-level complication such as an annual calendar usually gives up more than a sports reference.
What a watch is worth depends on how it is broken down. The house and the model set the range, condition and how complete the accessories are are each costed, and the market at the time fixes the landing point; differences within one reference come from case diameter, material, dial colour and generation.
How this price was set
Ms Yang’s watch settled at CNY 150,000, held up by three things. The first generation was discontinued around 2010 and the house opened a new reference afterwards, so nothing is being added to this one. The 38mm white gold case with the silver-grey sector dial is a dial layout unique to this generation and cannot be read as the same version as the later silver-white one. And annual calendars give up more on the secondary market than sports references do.
There is no list price to refer to for this generation, so the landing point is set by accessories and who is buying — within the usual range for a mid-level complication.
The price came out of bidding. After inspection the watch entered the platform, buyers across the country bid side by side, and Ms Yang picked one from the open offer sheet. Watch buy-back is a standing service on this site; Patek Philippe is priced against the market at the time and the purchase price does not enter the calculation.
