Mr Zheng, in Shenzhen, had owned this 14060M for years but was wearing it less and less, so he thought about selling. What concerned him was not whether it would sell but whether selling made sense — how far the market for an older Rolex sits from the current models, and whether being discontinued would push the offer down. He wanted one more thing confirmed as well: the bezel insert had been polished at some point, and would that affect the price?

The client
The model and the market
The Submariner is the diving line Rolex launched in 1953, and it has held demand on the secondary market for a long time. The 14060M is the no-date reference in the line, discontinued in 2012 and succeeded by the 114060. No-date references form a branch of their own: a plainer dial and a simpler construction, with settled demand among collectors of older watches, and a price that does not follow the sought-after date models.
The reference is discontinued and the house has no current list price to refer to; the price is set by supply and demand on the secondary market. The 14060M was not made in small numbers, so sales turn more on the production batch, the actual state of the bezel and case, and whether service records survive, than on scarcity.
What a watch is worth depends on how it is broken down. The house and the model set the range, condition and how complete the accessories are are each costed, and the market at the time fixes the landing point; differences within one reference come from case diameter, material, dial colour and generation.
How this price was set
Mr Zheng’s watch sold for CNY 49,000, with the offer made up of three parts. The reference was discontinued in 2012 and its successor moved to a ceramic bezel, so this aluminium-bezel generation is no longer made. The 40mm steel case with a black dial and black bezel is the standard Submariner specification. And the no-date reference has settled demand among collectors of older watches and does not rise and fall alongside the sought-after date models.
This reference was not made in small numbers, so what carries weight in the offer is the production batch, the state of the bezel and case, and whether service records exist — not scarcity. A bezel insert that has been polished or replaced, or a case that has been refinished, brings the offer down.
The price came out of bidding. After inspection the watch entered the platform, buyers across the country bid side by side, and Mr Zheng picked one from the open offer sheet. Rolex buy-back is a standing part of watch buy-back; high or low, it follows the market at the time and has nothing to do with the purchase price. (Market figures reflect publicly available data.)
