The figure on this page is what this particular transaction settled at. It reflects the house, the model, the condition, how complete the accessories were and the market at the time, and is not a quoted price for a comparable piece.

The client

Ms Guo, in Shanghai, had an Hermès Roulis 18 — what the market calls the small "pig nose" — in black calf, very lightly worn, with the flap opening and closing as it should. She had looked closely at both sizes before selling, and what she asked in the boutique was where the 18 and the 23 actually differ, why the prices of two sizes in one line cannot be compared directly, and how much missing accessories would take off.

The model and the market

The Roulis is identified by the interlocking double-ring clasp on the front, a shape drawn from Hermès’s anchor-chain motif; the resemblance is what earned it the "pig nose" nickname, though the house calls it Roulis. It is made in two sizes only, 18cm and 23cm. The 18 is the mini: compact, light to wear, usually carried cross-body or on one shoulder. The 23 holds more and works better on the shoulder. They are different models, their price bands do not carry across, and each is valued on its own. Black falls among the easy-to-sell colours and moves on quickly.

Handbag buy-back runs on no fixed discount. The house, the model, the condition, how complete the accessories are and the market at the time all get costed out together; within one reference, size, leather, body colour and the hardware pairing are variables in the same sum.

How this price was set

Ms Guo’s bag sold at CNY 17,500, with the number landing on two things: at 18cm it is the smaller of the two Roulis sizes and demand concentrates among cross-body wearers, and black is a neutral with the widest pool of buyers. This one graded A — no obvious scratching on the leather, light wear at the corners, and creasing consistent with normal use, each recorded during authentication and none of it structural. Accessories pulled down: the box and receipt were both lost, leaving the bag alone, so the shortfall is deducted.

The offer was not ours alone to make. Once the bag passed inspection it went onto the bidding platform, trade buyers across the country bid in the same window, the offer sheet was opened to the client line by line, and which one to take was Ms Guo’s to choose. The Roulis also falls under handbag buy-back, and retail never posts a price for it. (Market figures reflect publicly available data.)

What we did

  • Competitive buy-back

The bag goes onto the bidding platform and trade buyers post live offers within ten minutes. The number comes from the market, not from one shop

An appraiser team of more than a hundred. Every item is signed off by three of them, and each check is recorded line by line and photographed

  • Credentials

Named in 2025 to the first cohort of pre-owned goods circulation pilot enterprises by MOFCOM, the NDRC, the Ministry of Natural Resources and SAMR; in 2019 Vintage-Privée entered a three-way strategic partnership with CCIC (China Certification & Inspection Group) and Alibaba.

Questions about this case

What is a small Hermès "pig nose" worth at buy-back?

"Pig nose" is the trade’s name for the Roulis, and the small one is the 18cm. This Grade A black one in Shanghai, August 2026 — no obvious scratching, hardware lustre intact, the clasp closing smoothly — came in at CNY 17,500.

How do I tell a Roulis 18 from a 23?

By size and capacity. The 18 is smaller and lighter and suits cross-body wear; the 23 is larger and works better on the shoulder. They are different models and are valued separately — you cannot apply one size’s result to the other, and the bands do not carry across.

How many boutiques in Shanghai take the Kelly and the Roulis?

All 18 handle both lines. The Roulis is a regular and the Kelly a high-frequency category, but the process is the same: bring the bag and whatever accessories you still have. Book on 400-831-5667; addresses are on the Shanghai boutiques page.

Can a bag with no original accessories still be sold normally?

Yes. Accessories affect how high the offer is, not whether we can take it. This one had neither box nor receipt; the deduction was recorded honestly in the valuation, the price still came from trade bidding, and every line of the deduction is visible on the offer sheet.
