The Duma is Chanel’s backpack: a quilted body closing with a drawstring and a flap, with adjustable shoulder straps. Backpacks are a side branch in the Chanel line-up, so the buyer pool is narrower than for a classic flap and the offer is more sensitive to demand at the time — when there is someone looking, the price runs up; in a thin stretch, the bids pull in with it. Black calf wears well and does not show dirt, so it moves faster than others of the same model.

How this price was set
Ms Zheng’s bag sold for CNY 25,000, and only one thing really worked in its favour: black calf has the most takers on the secondary market, moves on quickly, and buyers are not fussy about the model. The other two pulled the other way — the condition was Grade A, with light wear on the body, and not one of the box, dust bag or receipt had been kept, so the shortfall is deducted as its own line, with the amount written plainly on the offer sheet. This one graded A: the quilting still full with no collapse, no fraying where the drawstring and straps meet the body, and the hardware carrying the sheen of normal use.
