The figure on this page is what this particular transaction settled at. It reflects the house, the model, the condition, how complete the accessories were and the market at the time, and is not a quoted price for a comparable piece.

The client

When Ms Hu brought a Birkin 30 into the boutique in Hangzhou, the lock, keys and dust bag were still with it; the box and the purchase receipt were not. The bag is gold-brown calf, used day to day, with wear along the corners. With the figure landing in the seventy-thousand band, what she most wanted before coming in was to see the reasoning line by line, and to know how much weight a colour like gold-brown really carries on the secondary market.

The model and the market

The Birkin arrived in 1984 — two handles, a turn lock and a hanging padlock, and the most recognisable bag Hermès makes. The 30 is the size that carries most of the circulation: it holds more than the 25 and handles more easily than the 35, and it is the size we take in most. Colour counts for a great deal on this model. Gold-brown, black and étoupe are the three neutrals: they lose the least on resale and draw the widest pool of buyers. At the same size and condition, other colour families can sit more than ten percentage points below those three.

There is no single formula for a bag. The house and the model set the baseline, condition and accessories add to or subtract from it, and the market at the time decides the landing point; between two of the same reference you still look at size, leather, colour and how the hardware is paired.

How this price was set

Ms Hu’s bag sold at CNY 72,000, and gold-brown was the main thing holding it up — one of the three neutrals, the widest pool of buyers, not fussy about who takes it. Two things pulled down: the condition was Grade B, with normal wear along the corners and on the leather, and the box and receipt were missing, so the accessories band steps back from its ceiling. The lock and keys were both there, which won a little of that back. The two appear as separate lines on the offer sheet.

The price was not ours to set — it came from trade buyers bidding in the same window on the platform. The offer sheet was laid out line by line for the client, and which one to take was hers to decide. The Birkin is a core category on the handbag buy-back page; official channels never post a price, and the landing point rests on what the secondary market wants at the time. Questions about this case

How is the buy-back price for a Birkin 30 worked out?

Colour, condition, leather and accessories all move the number, and two of the same size can be some way apart. There is no fixed price to copy across. In August 2026 this Grade B gold-brown one in Hangzhou sold for CNY 72,000.

Which holds value better, gold-brown or black?

Both are among the three neutrals, both are about as easy to move on, and both lose less than a seasonal colour. The actual offer still depends on leather and accessories, so colour alone does not settle it.

Which boutiques in Hangzhou buy Hermès bags?

The addresses of all five are on the Hangzhou boutiques page. Call 400-831-5667 to book and an advisor will put you at whichever is most convenient. The check starts when you arrive — you do not have to leave the bag and wait for a result.

On an expensive bag, how do I avoid being marked down by one party?

Look at whether the offer is formed by more than one bidder. Here the bag was checked, then put on the bidding platform, and buyers in several cities bid at the same time. The client chose from the list herself, so no single party held the pricing.
