When Ms Wang brought a Chanel 19 in the large size into the Shanghai boutique, the bag had been carried for a while and the leather showed it. Box, dust bag and purchase receipt had none of them been kept, leaving the bag alone. What was on her mind was something else: with the box, dust bag and receipt all gone, would the offer come in far below the same model with a complete set — and by how much?

The client
The model and the market
The 19 line launched in 2019 and makes its case on a plump, soft silhouette, oversized quilting and a thick tri-tone metal chain — one of Chanel’s newer classics. We handle a good many of them; the large size holds plenty and works for commuting and for travel. White lambskin reads clean, but pale leather is judged more closely on detail in the secondary market, and once the corners pick up marks the offer usually sits a tier below the same model in a darker colour.
A buy-back price is not arrived at by discounting what you paid. The house and the model frame the rough range, condition and accessories add and subtract within it, and the market at the time calibrates the result; within one reference, size, leather, colour and hardware pairing sort it further into tiers.
How this price was set
Ms Wang’s bag came in at CNY 11,500, with two things heading down: pale lambskin is scrutinised on the secondary market and the wear on both corners and leather was visible, and the box, dust bag and receipt were all gone, so the accessories line is deducted outright. In its favour: the large size has real demand for its capacity, and white is still among the easier pale colours to wear. This one graded B — normal wear on the leather, a used sheen on the hardware, and no sag in the body.
The figure was not called by anyone. Once the inspection was recorded, the bag went up on the bidding platform, buyers around the country bid within the same window, and the client decided for herself against an offer sheet set out line by line. The 19 in the large size is among the faster movers in the handbag buy-back categories, and the retail figure and the market figure stand apart from one another.
