The figure on this page is what this particular transaction settled at. It reflects the house, the model, the condition, how complete the accessories were and the market at the time, and is not a quoted price for a comparable piece.

The client

The Jige clutch Mr Huang brought into the Beijing boutique had spent a long time in a cabinet and had not been used much. Before selling he wanted one thing settled: clutches have a narrower audience than handbags, so would the offer be pushed too low simply because the market for them is small — and if so, which line would take the hit? He had no intention of paying for a vague number; he wanted to see how each item was worked out.

The model and the market

The Jige is Hermès’s clutch: a flap with a single metal strap clasp, no handle, held in the palm. It is the simplest construction the house makes. Its secondary audience is far narrower than the Birkin’s or the Kelly’s, so the sale price leans more on the leather, the condition and the colour themselves and is less sensitive to how hot the line is. And because the construction is so plain, how firmly the body holds and the state of the corners weigh more in the valuation than they would on a conventional handbag.

A buy-back price is not arrived at by discounting what you paid. The house and the model frame the rough range, condition and accessories add and subtract within it, and the market at the time calibrates the result; within one reference, size, leather, colour and hardware pairing sort it further into tiers.

How this price was set

The final figure on Mr Huang’s piece was CNY 6,579. What pulled down was the market itself — the buyer base for clutches is narrow to begin with and not many want to take one on. What held it up was the state of the piece: Grade S, with no wear to be seen on the leather, the flap firm, and the metal strap clasp holding its lustre well. This is a very small category, and the swing in price comes mostly from whether someone happens to be looking at the time. Ask about the same piece two months later and the number may well differ.

The figure was not called by anyone. Once the inspection was recorded, the bag went up on the bidding platform, buyers around the country bid within the same window, and the client decided for himself against an offer sheet set out line by line. The Jige is among the less sought-after categories in handbag buy-back, with no official figure to read it against. (Market figures reflect publicly available data.)

  • Credentials

Named in 2025 to the first cohort of pre-owned goods circulation pilot enterprises by MOFCOM, the NDRC, the Ministry of Natural Resources and SAMR; in 2019 Vintage-Privée entered a three-way strategic partnership with CCIC (China Certification & Inspection Group) and Alibaba.

Questions about this case

What is an Hermès Jige clutch worth at buy-back?

Leather, condition, colour and accessories set the landing point, and structurally clutches and handbags do not share a market. This Grade S Jige in Beijing, August 2026, sold for CNY 6,579.

Are clutches harder to sell than handbags?

The audience is genuinely narrower, but that is not the same as the offer being squeezed. A clutch’s price is set mainly by leather and condition, and under a bidding format, so long as someone in the trade wants it, the price reflects that. It is not undervalued for being a small model.

Where in Beijing can I sell an Hermès clutch?

Every Beijing boutique takes them, and clutches are handled the same way as handbags. Call 400-831-5667 to fix a time; the piece is checked in the boutique and quoted on the spot. Addresses are on the Beijing boutiques page.

Can I ship a clutch?

Send it freight-collect. The inspection result and the offer follow within one working day of arrival. A clutch is small and not easily crushed in transit. If it sells you are paid immediately; if not, it comes back as it was. Taking a few close-up photographs before you send it is worth doing.
