The figure on this page is what this particular transaction settled at. It reflects the house, the model, the condition, how complete the accessories were and the market at the time, and is not a quoted price for a comparable piece.

The client

When Ms Chen carried a Picotin Lock 18 into the Beijing boutique, the bag still looked barely bought. She had used it little since and simply kept it, and had now decided to sell. Once inside, she asked two things: whether condition like this would actually show up in the offer, and where this line currently sits on the secondary market. She did not want a rough number up front — she wanted to see how the price is built up a layer at a time.

The model and the market

The Picotin Lock is Hermès’s bucket bag, drawn from a horse’s feed bag: it closes with a lock at the mouth, the body is unlined, and the construction is about as simple as it gets while still being highly recognisable. The 18 is the small size in the line, holding just about what a day’s commute needs, and secondary demand concentrates on the 18 and the 22. Black is one of the three neutrals and has the widest pool of buyers; when we take this reference in, black and gold-brown have consistently turned over faster than seasonal colours.

There is no single formula for a bag. The house and the model set the baseline, condition and accessories add to or subtract from it, and the market at the time decides the landing point; between two of the same reference you still look at size, leather, colour and how the hardware is paired.

How this price was set

Ms Chen’s bag sold at CNY 26,000, with two things pushing up: the colour is black, one of the three neutrals, so there is no shortage of buyers; and the condition was Grade S, with no visible wear on the leather and the lock, body and handles all as they left the factory. Size counts as a credit too — the 18 does not come through in great numbers and demand for it is concentrated, so it usually quotes above the 22. It is harder to find in stock at retail as well, and harder still in good condition.

The price was not ours to set — it came from trade buyers bidding in the same window on the platform. The offer sheet was laid out line by line for the client, and which one to take was hers to decide. The Picotin Lock runs through handbag buy-back. Retail never posts a price for it, and the secondary landing point drifts day to day with who is buying. There is no price list to copy. (Market figures reflect publicly available data.)

Questions about this case

What is an Hermès Picotin worth at buy-back?

The Picotin Lock has to be worked out across size, condition, colour and accessories, and the 18 and the 22 cannot be read off each other. This Grade S black calf 18 in Beijing, August 2026, came in at CNY 26,000.

Does a bag close to new quote noticeably higher?

Yes. Condition is its own variable in the pricing. Grade S means almost no wear to the leather or hardware, and the offer lands in the upper part of the band for that reference. On this bag’s offer sheet, the reasoning behind the condition grade can be traced and checked line by line.

Where can I sell an Hermès bag in Beijing?

All ten Beijing boutiques handle Hermès. Call 400-831-5667 with the reference first and book a time. The check and the quote are done in one visit — no second trip, finished the same day. Addresses are on the Beijing boutiques page.

Do I need to book before coming in?

It is worth booking. Opening hours vary slightly between boutiques. Call 400-831-5667 to fix a time and an appraiser will keep the slot free, so you go straight into the check without waiting.
