What Mr Zhu brought in was a Birkin 30 in black Togo, close to new, with the rain cover, keys, lock and dust bag still to hand but the box and receipt long gone. With the figure landing in the ninety-thousand band, what he wanted to know was how close the offer would sit to the market at the time, and whether missing the box and the receipt would drag it down noticeably.

The figure on this page is what this particular transaction settled at. It reflects the house, the model, the condition, how complete the accessories were and the market at the time, and is not a quoted price for a comparable piece.
The client
The model and the market
The Birkin arrived in 1984. Two handles, a turn lock and a hanging padlock are what identify it, and the 30 is the size that carries most of the circulation. The Togo on this one is finely grained, firm and resistant to scuffing, and black is the colourway least fussy about who buys it.
What a bag is worth depends on how it is broken down. Model and house draw the range first, condition and how complete the accessories are are each costed, and the market at the time fixes the landing point; differences within one reference come from size, leather, body colour and hardware pairing.
How this price was set
Mr Zhu’s bag came in at CNY 92,000, resting on condition and colour. The condition was Grade S — no visible scratching on the leather, the hardware still with its original lustre. The colour was black, the widest net there is. The only thing pulling down was accessories: with the box and receipt missing, the offer steps back from the ceiling, though it weighs less than the first two.
The price came out of bidding. After inspection the bag entered the platform, trade buyers across the country bid side by side, and the client picked one from the open offer sheet. The Birkin is a mainstay on the handbag buy-back page, and the house publishes no price for it. (Market figures reflect publicly available data.)
